Warm spaces drop in workshops

Updated: Dec 1, 2023

I've been asked to do some drop in workshops at St George's Church in Cam which is taking place in the national Warm Spaces.

Warm spaces are a network of friendly spaces in the local community where people feel welcomed to visit and can meet others, take part in activities, get a warm drink or meal, or spend some quiet time away from their home. At St George's they have really yummy cakes with a tea or coffee all for free and if you want to stay for soup its only £1. There's a children's section with toys so they can be entertained whilst you catch up with friends, or quieter areas if you just want a bit of calm reading a book.

The workshop sessions are also being run as part of The Quarry Chapel outreach. Normally I run a regular art class on a Thursday morning for the local community at the chapel. However, the chapel is currently being refurbished, so they've teamed up with St George's Church to support the community.

The first week we tried our hand at fabric printing with some great results

They used painted papers, cut out shapes and then using the heat press the inks dispersed into the fabric making the pattern permanent.

The following week we tried watercolour doodles. They either drew an image in ink and put watercolour on top, or they created patterns with the watercolour and afterwards used pens to doodle on top.

Other activities have included watercolour cards, clay bowls, acrylic painting and collage
